If you want to give your child the freedom to live on their own as an adult and to hold down a job of their choice, it’s important to progressively give your child opportunities to become more independent as they grow older. As an example, while you may want to help spoon food a small child with down syndrome, as your child’s hand eye coordination develops, they should be able to feed themselves simple to eat foods on their own. Such as mashed potato and macaroni cheese.

Just remember not to push your child too far too soon as to take gradual steps, when it comes to giving your child more responsibility and opportunities to become more independent.

Assign your child simple chores to complete:

It’s a great idea to assign your child simple chores to complete, so that they’ll be able to take care of themselves and their household as an independent adult. Just be sure to give your child, simple tasks to complete. Such as making their bed in the morning or putting away their toys. By teaching your children to clean up after themselves, you’ll also free up valuable time in your day.

Give your child plenty of praise:

Children with special needs respond well to praise as they can be more emotional than children who were born without down syndrome. For this reason, it’s a great idea to praise your child every time they do something right. As examples, praise your child when they complete their homework, dress themselves in the morning or make their bed.

Find unique ways to teach your child new skills:

Many parents of special needs children report that their children learn best through play time. So it’s a great idea to use simple, educational games in order to teach your child new information.
