Everything you need to know about the bridges special needs school:

It’s a non profit school:

The Bridge School which is located in Hillsborough in California is a non profit school which was founded with the mission to support children with special needs in receiving a high level of education.

The students who attend it have a wide variety of special needs conditions:

Some of the students who are enrolled at the Bridge School have severe speech or motor impediments, while other students have serious physical impairments.

It was founded in 1986 and has become one of the world’s leading schools for special needs students:

The Bridge School was founded by Pegi Young, Dr Marilyn Buzolich and Jim Forderer in 1986. In the decades since the school first opened its doors, the Bridge School has built a reputation for being one of the world’s leading schools for special needs students. Pepi Young was inspired to found a special needs school after she had great difficulty trying to enrol her non verbal son in a local school.

It uses ground breaking technology to benefit special needs students:

The Bridge School is also known for successfully using augmentative and alternative communication technologies and assistive technologies to assist its students in achieving academic and social success. In fact many special needs schools around the world have chosen to use the same technologies in their school curriculums.

Furthermore, the school invites teaches from around the world to become resident teachers. So that international teachers are able to learn how to use augmentative and alternative communication technologies and assertive technologies when they return to their classrooms in their homelands. Typically each international teacher will teach at the school for a full year. Some of the countries which have sent teachers to work at the Bridge School include Mexico, India, Poland and South Korea.

The primary aim of the school is to give students the tools which they need to return to public schools:

Surprisingly the primary mission of the Bridge School is not to retain long term pupils. Instead the school aims to give each student the resources, tools and confidence which they need to thrive in public schools. Once a child has learned how to use alternative communication technologies and assistive technologies to take control of their own education, they are encouraged to travel back to their home districts in order to attend a regular school.

While the founders of some special needs schools firmly believe that special needs students should be educated at special needs specific schools for their entire school lives, the founders of the Bridge School believe otherwise.

So if you’re looking to send your special needs child to a school which will give them the technologies, tools and confidence to succeed in life it’s well worth finding out more information about the Bridge School in California.
