While Both Sides of the Table presents research, insights and stories from a wide variety of educators, it was edited together by Phillip Smith. Who is currently an associate professor at Eastern Michigan University and has written and published a variety of books on the topic of disability studies. One of Smith’s most recent publications is Whatever Happened to Inclusion? The Place of Students with Intellectual Disabilities in Education. Which is well worth reading is you’re passionate about disability studies.

It looks at how educators experiences with students with disability has effected their understanding of disabilities:

Both Sides of the Table features honest, insightful experiences which a wide variety of educators have had as a result of teaching students with disabilities. One of the advantages of reading this particular book is that you’ll get to see the human side of educators and how different teachers are shaped by their unique experiences of teaching individuals with disabilities. As each educator has a slightly different view of what it means to have a disability and how they can best serve their students.

It also offers stories from individuals who are labelled as having special needs and their families:

The reason why Smith named this particular book Both Sides of the Table is that it presents stories from the educators and researchers who are on one side of the table and the individuals who have special needs and their families, who are sitting at the other side of the table. One of the reasons why Both Sides of the Table is such as balanced read is that you get to hear about disability in education from both sides of the table. Which will provide you with a more holistic view of the place of disabled students in the public education system.
