Life before the invention of electric lights was incredibly different as individuals would have to rely on gas lamps and candles in order to light their homes after nightfall. In fact, before the invention of electric lights, many individuals would go to bed as early as possible in order to wake up with the sun rise and be productive with their day. Some of the famous inventors who have been attributed with helping develop the first electric lights include Joseph Wilson Swan, Warren de la Rue, and Thomas Edison. The latter of which is usually referred to as the ‘father of the light bulb’.
Prior to the invention of the first car, individuals had to rely on horses and horse-drawn carriages as well as trains and ships in order to travel. For this reason, it wasn’t unusual for individuals to remain close to their homes. The first modern car was invented in 1886 by a German inventor named of Karl Benz. If his last name seems familiar it’s due to the fact that the well-known German-based car company Mercedes-Benz was named after Karl Benz. However, the first car that was sold to the masses was the 1908 Model T which was produced by the American car company, Ford.
The humble wheel is the oldest of the five inventions featured in this list and it was originally invented by the Mesopotamians in 3,500 BC when the first wheel was created by potters. Just 300 years later, wheels were used in chariot racing.
